A former Jigawa state governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido has spent a night under police custody, just as some stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have thronged the Police Zone 1 Headquarters along BUK road in Kano to secure his bail.
When Our correspondent reporter visited the police Zone 1 headquarters Monday, it observed that hundreds of PDP supporters had converged at the main entrance of the of the headquarters in solidarity to the former governor.
It was also noted that security was beefed off at the gate of the police headquarters.
The Jigawa state ex-governor was arrested by the police on Sunday following an allegation of inciting statements he was said to have made on April 8, 2017 at the PDP secretariat in Dutse, the state capital while addressing members of his party.
The Jigawa state government petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police in-charge of Zone 1 headquarters in Kano, Mr Kayode Aderanti on the matter, who in turned invited the former governor.
However, Lamido, who drove from his home town Bamaina and arrived at the Police Zone 1 Headquarters in Kano around 10am on Sunday, was detained by the police.
The Public Relation Officer of Police Zone 1, Muhammad Sabo Sokoto had on Sunday told newsmen that the former governor was accused of inciting PDP supporters to disrupt the forthcoming Jigawa state local government polls.
He explained that Lamido’s statements which were capable of causing violence in the state, also contradicted section 114 of the Penal Code.
He said police are investigating the matter and would not hesitate to drag the former governor to court, if the outcome of their investigation warrants for his arraignment.
Speaking to Daily Trust on phone, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Salisu Mamuda, confirmed that the former governor had spent a night under police custody.
He said they were not able to secure his bail on Sunday, but said he might be released on bail on Monday.
“We are right now at the Police zone 1 headquarters trying to see if we can secure a bail and from all indication we will achieve that because even for self recognition Lamido can be release on bail,” he said
